Mexican Gothic By Silvia Moreno-Garcia | Mini Book Review
BOOK REVIEW: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia — I am obsessed and I completely recommend it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I really enjoyed “Mexican Gothic”. I was obsessed and kept telling myself I’d read just one more chapter but then couldn’t put it down. It was haunting and full of gothic goodness. This story takes place in the 1950s in Mexico. The main character Noemí goes to a small town to check on her newly married cousin who has been ill. We soon learn that her cousin suspects that she is being poisoned by her husband. There are strong themes and topics in eugenics, colonialism, toxic masculinity, and the female gothic while also…
My Reading List for Hispanic + Latinx Heritage Month
Hispanic and Latinx heritage month goes from September 15th to October 15th and I’m so excited to share with you what I am looking forward to reading! While I tend to read quite a few books by Latinx and Hispanic authors as it is, I really wanted to organize my TBR (to be read) list to focus on Latinx and Hispanic authors specifically over the next four weeks. This list is not exhaustive, there are so many books and authors to choose from, so please also take a look at what other book bloggers on Instagram and TikTok are recommending. I also likely will add more books to my list…
I Fixed My Insomnia After YEARS of Having a Terrible Sleep Schedule
I’m not sure that I will never deal with insomnia again, but I can say it’s been months, at least 8 months if not longer that I have had a good and consistent sleep schedule. This has never happened before and I just feel very confident that my sleep schedule will stay consistent. I have struggled with insomnia for years, as far back as middle school. I was never fully rested as a teenager, and as an adult it got crazy. I have mostly worked night shift jobs in the medical, entertainment, and restaurant industry. This somewhat allowed me to function under the radar, but I was always trying to…
Why I’m No Longer Tracking Macros or Focusing on Weightloss
I have been cautious in the world of macro tracking and IIFYM (if it fits your macros) because while it can be an efficient method for reaching your goals, it can also cause disordered eating. I probably knew better, but after my bulk in 2019...
You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria
This book kept popping up in my feed with good reviews and I liked that this was a Latine/x story written by a Latina author. I wasn’t too sure what I was getting into beforehand, to be honest. Romance is just fun sometimes; that’s really what I would say about this story-it’s fun and It’s hot. (read: get your Tinder dates queued up). It is not exactly like “Jane the Virgin” or “Ugly Betty” in terms of storyline like I’ve seen mentioned in some reviews. However, the two main characters, Jasmine and Ashton, are the actors of a telenovela being reimagined for mainstream tv. So, it has a similar vibe…
Iceland in January: Trip Recap
Camron and I started 2020 off strong with a trip to Iceland. I had been wanting to go to Iceland for a few years and kept putting it off. To be honest with travel you kind of just have to commit or it’s easy to find reasons why you can’t make it happen. At least that is the case for me, and that means just picking a date, pulling out the credit card and booking the flight. I loved Iceland and I can’t wait to go back during the Summer and maybe rent a camper van. While an expensive destination, it can be done on a budget and a very…
Puerto Rico: Recap and All My Tips!
Heads Up! My video edit of our trip is at the bottom of the page if you want to check it out! I traveled to Puerto Rico in May of 2019 and it was amazing! I also learned some things about planning a trip to Puerto Rico; I wish I would have been more specific and detailed with my trip planning. I thought I was not one for detailed itineraries when traveling, I tend to like to make decisions as I go, or rather change my decision as I go. How could I possibly know which tours will sound good in the moment, or if I’ll want to stay in…
Should You Book Tours When Traveling?
Spoiler, Go Ahead, Take the Tour. When traveling you should go after an authentic experience; you should really get to know the culture, the people, the neighborhoods. I have always been told to stay where the locals stay, eat where the locals eat and well, do what the locals do. This is solid advice, but sometimes it is worth it to do the touristy things too. The thing is that locals don’t go on tours, and tours or popular photo spots are then labeled as too touristy and unauthentic. At least in my experience, doing the touristy thing as a traveler is usually put down or made fun of. You…
How to Backpack Grand Teton National Park: Packing and Tips
Hiking in The Grand Tetons was amazing; the views, fresh air, and an accomplishment of the ultimate survival. It is my favorite mountain range to hike and camp in and I can’t recommend it enough. Along with my recommendation to explore this national park, I have some tips about what to bring with you on your trip into the backcountry.
Tips for Staying in Hostels and Staying Safe
Staying in hostels can be fun and also pretty affordable. They are a great way to make friends, especially if traveling solo. Usually people staying in hostels are looking to meet other travelers and make friends. While I have stayed in quite a few hostels with no issues, I have had things stolen and I have heard quite a few stories of people having their things stolen.
